KINGOFNOISE
HIJOKAIDAN
NYC 11.18.00

In November of 2000, the crew from Alchemy Records came over for what was for a few years a bi-annual tradition in New York, a gig at the Knitting Factory with Borbetomagus. This time it was an expanded version of Hijokaidan, with guitarist Masahiko "Solmania" Ohno, singer Miki Sawaguchi and drummer Naoko Otani joining regular members Junko and Jojo Hiroshige.

I have to admit, my pictures didn't come out as good as I'd hoped so I've only posted a few of them here.

Miki, in her first New York appearance, surprised everybody by starting the set with an acappella rendition of "Mercedes Benz."

But Naoko starting laying out a pounding dirge beat, the guitarists started doing their thing, and the band was giving the audience what they came for.

It was a hypnotic sound. The biggest surprise was the combination of the two singers. We all were ready for Junko's somewhat shrieky style, but Miki sang in a style usually associated with Japanese female pop stars. One of the world's best noise-rock bands with "cute" vocals? Believe it or not, it sounded great!

As usual, it was a blast watching Jojo as he communicated with his guitar. But when that kimono came off, all eyes were on Miki...

***Solmania and Jojo Hiroshige will appear on Opposite Records' upcoming compilation "Do You Have Earplugs"!!!***

More pics of these guys.
